Bucket Bag Backpack

After attending the webinar “From Bagmaker to Designer” by Ellie Lum, I created a vision board to help guide my thoughts about my next project. The images I chose embraced a cozy vibe and I knew I wanted to use a soft corduroy as the material. Then I found the Lucy Backpack pattern from Swoon, and the vision was complete. I followed the pattern for this first prototype version (mostly) but will likely make some tweaks the next time I make it. The bag has a cinched top with grommets and a drawstring under the flap. There’s an exterior zipper pocket on the back under the backpack straps, and two slip pockets in the interior that are nice and deep. I added a contrast border along the front by cutting the corduroy across the grain for visual interest.

I love the corduroy, but I think it was too thick for the straps, especially when interfaced. It made some very thick points in the seams that were difficult to sew over, although my little workhorse machine was able to chug through without breaking a needle. Next time, I’ll use webbing for the straps.

The double D-ring closure on the front is secure but hard to open quickly, so this bag will be most useful when transporting things, not so much as a handbag where I want to be in and out all the time. I’ll try a different closure method on the flap next time.
